English Cocker Spaniel is a hunting dog. It belongs to flushing dogs.

Flushing dogs work close to the hunter, to put birds into the air for a shot.

If properly trained they retrieve perfectly from the land and water. They own a perfect smell, which allows them to work while tracing and fetching. They are endowed with a great hunting passion.
